Project management newbies aren't the only ones in danger of confusing scope creep with scope discovery. The difference between the two lies in defining a very thin line. Test your ability to discern between the two and see whether you're as on top of the game as you think you are!
When you're working on a project, and you're not sure whether you're adding necessary information to the scope, it's time to ask yourself a few questions:
- Does the new information make the scope more clear? If so, then you have a case of scope discovery.
- Does the new information make the scope more focused? If so, then you have a case of scope discovery.
- Does the new information make the scope less confusing or vague? If so, then you have a case of scope discovery.
If, on the other hand, the new information you are adding to your project is making the project less clear, less focused, and more confusing or vague, you may have a case of scope creep. Moreover, if you find you're constantly adding bulk to the scope of your project, you are drowning in scope creep. If you're adding on flourishes, bells, and whistles to the project, you may be experiencing scope creep - especially if it's not clear as to why these elements are part of the project.
